Archives and Migration

ICARUS Convention #30: Archives and Traces of Migration

Date: 3-5 May 2023
Venue: Sittard & Maastricht
Registration: tba
Call for Papers: open until 31 March 2023

We are happy to announce the 30th ICARUS Convention which will take place from 3 to 5 May 2023 in Sittard and in Maastricht. It will be hosted by Time Machine members Archives De Domijnen/Euregional Historical Centre Sittard-Geleen, with the assistance of the Historical Centre Limburg and the Social Historical Centre for Limburg.

Thematic priority of the convention will be how archives in (and outside) Europe deal with migration and especially with the archival material regarding migration:

  • Do they own any materials about migration and do they actively collect them?
  • Are these materials being made visible (and how)?
  • Are archives working together with universities to scientifically research and evaluate them? And with museums to present them?

Migration is a topic that is very important in present days, but migration, of course, happened at all times. Traces of it are therefore visible in archives throughout Europe. The conference aims to see and hear examples how these kinds of archives have been handled in the past and how they are handled now. What can we learn from each other?

There will be time to present and discuss the theme (participants of the Creative Europe-project AToM (Archives and Traces of Migration) will take the lead in this). There will be discussions, the sharing of experiences and the development of possible solutions and strategies will be explored, so feel free to submit your proposals for presentations until 31 March 2023 via email to Peer Boselie (cc to Nina Vogels please!):
