Zamora Medieval XR

Bringing Europe’s Medieval Heritage to Life Through Immersive Technologies

How can digital technologies help us experience historical places as they once were? And how can immersive experiences make cultural heritage more accessible while supporting the sustainable development of rural communities?

Zamora Medieval XR offers an exciting example of how 3D digitisation, Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality (XR) can transform the interpretation and presentation of cultural heritage.

Developed in the Spanish province of Zamora as part of the European RURACTIVE project, the initiative uses immersive technologies to reconnect audiences with the region’s rich medieval past.

At the heart of the project are digital reconstructions of two remarkable historical sites: the Castle of Castrotorafe and the Monastery of Santa María de Moreruela. Based on historical, architectural and heritage documentation, these reconstructions allow visitors to explore how the sites may have appeared during their periods of greatest splendour. Audiovisual scenes also recreate aspects of medieval everyday life, offering additional historical context.

Beyond these two flagship sites, the digital platform brings together 26 heritage locations across 20 municipalities in the province. Visitors can access 360-degree virtual tours, historical information, audiovisual content and interactive games through computers, smartphones and tablets. QR codes at heritage locations also connect physical visits with digital experiences, broadening access to the content.

Importantly, Zamora Medieval XR demonstrates that digital innovation can contribute to more than the documentation and interpretation of historic monuments. By making rural heritage more visible and accessible, the initiative also supports cultural tourism, local engagement and new opportunities for regional development.

As part of RURACTIVE, the project illustrates how technology, cultural heritage and community collaboration can work together to foster more sustainable and inclusive rural futures.

At the Time Machine Organisation (TMO), we welcome initiatives that explore the potential of digital technologies to preserve, interpret and share Europe’s cultural heritage, while creating meaningful connections between heritage sites, communities and audiences.
