Public Event at Gartenbaukino

Discover Vienna’s History Through the Vienna Time Machine

How can films and photographs help us rediscover the history of Vienna? And how can digital technologies open up new perspectives on the city’s past?

On 30 November 2026, the Vienna Time Machine will be presented as part of the Wiener Vorlesungen at Gartenbaukino in Vienna. The event, titled “Zeitmaschine Modernes Wien – Stadterkundungen durch Filme und Fotos”, will introduce the new Vienna Time Machine web platform, exploring the city’s visual history through historical films and photographs.

The presentation will be given by Michael Loebenstein, Director of the Austrian Film Museum, and Ingo Zechner, Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History. The event will also feature a discussion moderated by journalist Eva Konzett, with opening remarks by Vienna City Councillor Veronica Kaup-Hasler.

The Vienna Time Machine is a collaborative initiative that uses digital technologies to explore and make accessible Vienna’s rich audiovisual heritage, building on more than 15 years of research and collaboration.

The event is organised by Wiener Vorlesungen in cooperation with the Austrian Film Museum and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History.
