The 6th European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) Conference is one of Europe’s most inspiring events for researchers, practitioners and advocates of citizen science. This time taking place in Oulu, Finland, from 3–6 March 2026.
Hosted by the University of Oulu in the year the city holds the title of European Capital of Culture, ECSA 2026 brings together a wide range of perspectives from across the citizen science landscape to explore how science can connect communities across regions, disciplines and traditions.
Theme: Citizen Science between Centre and Periphery
At the heart of ECSA 2026 is the theme “Citizen Science between Centre and Periphery”. This topic highlights the rich diversity of citizen science across different contexts, from densely populated metropolitan hubs to remote regions and rural landscapes. Discussions will examine how citizen science intersects with sustainability, culture, history, public health, policy, legal systems and more.
Conference Format
The conference spans several days of dynamic engagement and networking:
- Pre-conference day (2 March): Dedicated to ECSA Working Group meetings
- Scientific programme (3–6 March): Panels, workshops and roundtables discuss the latest trends and research in citizen science
- Closing and keynote (6 March afternoon): Public keynote address and final wrap-up
- Citizen Science Festival (6 March evening): A free, open-to-all festival celebrating citizen science with interactive exhibits, activities and showcases of inspiring projects
- Excursions (7 March): Optional activities for attendees who want to explore Oulu and its surroundings after the conference programme concludes
