We are delighted to announce that the 35th ICARUS Convention will take place at the State Archives of Venice (Archivio di Stato di Venezia) from 12 to 14 November 2025. The venue, located in the very heart of the historic city at Campo dei Frari 3002, provides a fitting backdrop for the theme “Bridging Centuries: Digital Pathways for Medieval Charters and Beyond”.
This year’s convention will focus on the challenges and opportunities of digitising medieval charters, with particular attention to developing solutions for machine-readable and machine-understandable access. Beyond this, the programme will also embrace a broader spectrum of digitisation practices, showcasing technologies, workflows, and innovative applications that support the study, preservation, and accessibility of archival heritage.
Venice itself – historic crossroads of cultures – embodies the very idea of bridging past and present, and will serve as the perfect setting for fostering dialogue between archivists, researchers, students, citizen archivists, and experts from around the world.
Content & Call for Papers
The convention seeks to highlight the dialogue between technology and archival documentation through experiences, best practices, and new research proposals. Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
- Creation and implementation of databases for archival sources
- Digital technologies supporting study, research, and conservation
- Experiences and case studies in digitisation workflows
- Applications of artificial intelligence and blockchain in archival research and management
- Technologies for teaching and learning paleography and diplomatics
We invite proposals for presentations (approx. 20 minutes) on the topics above.
Submission Guidelines:
- Send your proposal (name, institution, title, abstract) to as-ve.eventi@cultura.gov.it
- Presentations may be delivered in English or Italian
- Deadline: 15 October 2025
While ICARUS strongly encourages in-person participation in Venice to benefit from networking and exchange, online presentations via Zoom will also be possible. The main session will be live-streamed for remote participants.

- 12 November 2025: Annual ICARUS General Assembly (members only)
