Artificial Intelligence is transforming how knowledge is created, accessed and shared. As Europe advances its ambitions for AI innovation, it is essential that cultural heritage is recognised as a valuable contributor to this transformation.
Cultural heritage institutions hold vast and diverse collections of knowledge, data and cultural resources. These assets offer significant potential for developing AI applications that are grounded in European history, cultural diversity and shared values. At the same time, their use raises important questions about data quality, accessibility, intellectual property, provenance and the responsible application of AI.
The European Data Space for Cultural Heritage is calling on stakeholders to support a campaign to put cultural heritage at the heart of public AI in Europe.
The campaign highlights the importance of:
- Innovating: Unlocking the potential of Europe’s cultural heritage data to support AI research, development and new applications.
- Protecting: Ensuring that cultural heritage resources are used responsibly, respecting rights, provenance, authenticity and the interests of heritage institutions and communities.
- Empowering: Strengthening the role of cultural heritage organisations and professionals in shaping Europe’s AI landscape.
At the Time Machine Organisation (TMO), we strongly recognise the importance of connecting digital innovation with the needs and values of the cultural heritage sector. Ensuring that heritage is part of Europe’s AI development is not only an opportunity for technological progress, but also an investment in a more diverse, inclusive and culturally informed digital future.
