We are delighted to welcome a new member to the Time Machine Organisation community: the Humanities DataLab, Institute of Population and Social Research, Marmara University.
Their project, Istanbul Time Machine: Socio-Spatial and 3D Reconstruction of Historic Peninsula Neighborhoods (1880–1920), brings a fascinating and innovative approach to exploring the past.
Reconstructing Ottoman Istanbul through data
The project focuses on reconstructing late Ottoman Istanbul (ca. 1880–1920) by combining textual and spatial data within a unified digital environment.
By integrating:
- Historical newspapers
- Cartographic sources
- Spatial datasets
the initiative enables new forms of research into urban processes, social dynamics, and historical transformations.
A key strength of the project lies in linking textual information to spatial entities—opening up new possibilities for interdisciplinary research and digital storytelling.
Advancing digital heritage research
The Istanbul Time Machine exemplifies how 3D technologies and data-driven approaches can deepen our understanding of complex historical environments while making them more accessible to researchers and wider audiences alike.
