Broumov – 3D Reconstruction of the gothic appearance of the monastery church

Overview

Project duration: 2019 - 2023 Date coverage: 1450 - 1550

3D / 4D modelling and reconstruction Urban History

The beginnings of the town of Broumov date back to the 13th century, when the whole area was colonized thanks to the Břevnov Benedictines. However, we do not have more accurate sources and information on this period. At the end of the 13th century, a rectory stood on the site of today’s church, which was then rebuilt into a castle, to which a three-nave church was added in the second half of the 14th century. The Broumov monastery began to develop especially from the time of the Hussite wars in the first half of the 15th century, when the Břevnov monks found refuge here and Broumov became an important center of Catholicism in Eastern Bohemia. The monastery was hit by two catastrophes in the 17th century – occupation by the Swedes and a devastating fire, but then came a period of prosperity, which resulted in costly Baroque reconstruction.

The aim of the project is to reconstruct the oldest possible form of the monastery church. Today we have only some elements that represent the main indications of the intended reconstruction. It is a demanding process, consisting in the research of available sources, thorough construction-historical research, combining and supplementing knowledge on the basis of analogies. The process of preparing a 3D model has already begun, but now a number of questions need to be answered before it can be continued.

The 3D reconstruction of the monastery church represents the cornerstone for further knowledge of the history of the place and the city and is a prerequisite for the reconstruction of the history of the city and the region with the help of available IT tools.
