Documentary Heritage

Safeguarding European Archives for a Sustainable Future

The International Council on Archives has released the latest edition of FLASH, its biannual digital magazine featuring an in-depth look at SAGA (Sustainable Archives and Greener Approaches), written by the Head of International Cooperation at the Spanish State Archives.

The article highlights why documentary heritage is crucial for identity, collective memory, and community resilience, especially as archives face increasing threats from natural and human-made disasters. Recent examples include the 2024 floods in Valencia, where vital citizen records were lost, and the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has resulted in severe damage to archival holdings across several regions.

The feature provides an overview of the SAGA project’s mission and its strong multidisciplinary European partnership working to protect and future-proof archives across the continent.
